Chimneys

Chimneys can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We can advise you on what appliance or fire-place would be most suitable for you depending on the aperture and dimensions of your chimney. We can point, rebuild, extend or design the chimney to suit your needs.

CCTV recordings can ensure that you have a safe chimney.

Leaking Chimneys

Leaking chimneys are caused by the lime mortar disintegrating and the exposed pointing that remains starting to corrode, resulting in smoke leaking through the chimney into rooms, loft spaces or into a neighbour’s flue. Our fitter's install flexible liners into leaking chimneys when installing wood-burning stoves, so that the dangerous smoke goes up the stainless steel chimney flue.

Leaking chimney flues are one reason to have a flexible liner installed with your wood burning stove. They also make your stove work better because metal conducts heat quicker and makes the stove draw properly. If no flexible liner is installed by our wood stove fitters, a chimney could start to leak a few years after the chimney passed an integrity test.

Ventilation

Whether you have a stove or an open fire, oxygen is very important for an appliance to be able to run efficiently, it is better to have more draught than a lack of draught. Each Kilowatt of appliance requires 550 square metres of air in order to burn efficiently. The age the building also needs to be taken into account.

Flue Heights

When installing a twin-wall double insulated chimney system, you need to ensure that the chimney height is compliant with the building regulations. Below is a guide to the clearances you must have in order to comply.

The flue must clear the roof by the distances laid out below to ensure that you receive a good draw on the chimney. Flue gases must be able to flow from the chimney freely in order not to cause any risks to the property.

A chimney that does not have the height laid out below could suffer from a downdraught problem resulting in the flue gases not escaping freely and causing problems. If you come out through a roof and you are within 600mm of the highest point of the roof then you must clear the roof by 600mm. If you are coming out further down the roof level and more than 600mm then you must extend the chimney up a minimum of 1 metre and you must keep going until you either clear the highest point or you create a horizontal distance from the tiles of 2.3 metres.

We can carry out chimney sweeping on open fires, wood-burning stoves, mult- fuel stoves, range cookers. We can also undertake core balling and unblock chimneys from birds nest and debris.
